The Waite Room was set up in 2021 by experienced Hayle based personal trainer Tracy Waite. Tracy, who has been a PT since 2015, is strongly connected to the local community and has an acute awareness of its needs and challenges. Her particular expertise lies in supporting individuals with both physical and mental health challenges, helping to guide them to finding resilience and confidence within themselves.
Tracy believes in the power of a holistic approach to wellness but acknowledges that this can be the preserve of those who have the financial means to access facilities such as spas and health clubs. With many people who live and work in Cornwall on a minimum living wage and working in some of the hardest-hit industries of tourism and hospitality during the pandemic, the impact on physical and mental health has been severely detrimental among those who have the least resources to access services and facilities.
Tracy uses the coastal location of Hayle and its 3 miles of stunning beach to run activities for groups who choose to walk and talk, taking in the scenery and connecting to their environment as well as each other, or use physical training and bodyweight exercises to better understand their bodies and develop coping strategies to explore their emotions. The PAC 4 MEN project (Physical Activity Community 4 Mental Emotional Nourishment) is one such project that invites men to use physical activity as a means of quietening the internal dialogue and use equipment such as slam balls and battle ropes to release emotions in a controlled, liberating way. This can be alongside traditional talking therapies to give men the safe space to experience emotional release and connection with themselves.
Tracy is trained in mental health first aid, counselling and suicide prevention which all combine to give her the skills to support individuals with quite complex needs and she works in close collaboration with other agencies for those who need additional support. Her vision for The Waite Room is to tailor what she can offer to individuals and groups in the heart of the community of Hayle, linking people together in their environment as they gain confidence and resilience in body and mind.
Corinthian is pleased to support Tracy in her aim and will also have access to her services as part of our staff wellbeing program.
